  • No real base. Gravel spread directly on native soil doesn't stay gravel for long. Under load, the stone works down into soft ground and the soil works up. Within a season or two you have a mud-and-rock mixture that behaves like neither.

  • Water running down it instead of off it. A driveway with no crown becomes the lowest point in the landscape, which means every rain event turns it into a channel. Moving water carries stone away — that's the whole mechanism behind washouts.

  • No provision for crossing water. Where a driveway crosses a natural drainage path without a properly sized and set culvert, the water will either pond behind the driveway or cut straight through it.

Subgrade Preparation

Topsoil and organic material come off. Soft or unsuitable areas get excavated and replaced with better material. The exposed subgrade gets compacted. On sites with particularly soft or wet soil, geotextile fabric is placed between the subgrade and the base stone — it separates the two layers so they can't mix, and it distributes load.
